We heard from Captain Brian Trautman of SV Delos a while back about sailing around the world. As a way to mix things up, they recently sailed far from their usual tropical landscapes to one of iceberg-filled water of Svalbard, only 600 miles from the North Pole. The experience proved rewarding and overflowing with adventure. We get to hear about everything from their night watching for damaging icebergs as well as their “Day of Magic” that includes an up close encounter with a polar bear. The other half of the SV Delos crew, Brady Trautman and Alex Blue, are here today to tell about that far north experience. They’re catching up with us during their 6500 nautical miles "Lap of the Northern Atlantic Ocean”. Have you ever wanted to just quit your job, sell your house and head out on an adventure for a decade? Yeah, me too. Today we chat with someone who actually did that and is still doing it, Brian Trautman. After being unsatisfied with the “perfect job”, house, car, etc., he came across a book about sailing across the ocean and knew that was what he needed to do with his life. He sold everything he owned, bought a boat, and sailed to New Zealand from Seattle. That first experience started a trend that would extend for more than a decade and lead to countless adventures that have been chronicled on his YouTube channel: Sailing SV Delos , gaining over 100 million views in the process. To date, Brian has visited 6 continents, 40 countries, and crossed every ocean on his 53 foot Ketch. Ian Packham is a trained medical researcher turned adventurer. He decided to circumnavigate the African continent by means of public transportation. The trip was this first time anyone had done this solo and unsupported. During his 13 month – 25,000 mile trip, Ian was mistaken for an undercover UN official during Liberia’s presidential election and was denied access to the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was a 2013 runner-up for the National Geographic Traveler writing competition and his new book “Encircle Africa: Around Africa by Public Transport” chronicles his adventure. www.encircleafrica.org Get the Book: Encircle Africa: Around Africa by Public Transport Download This Episode
